I'm thinking about changing the grille in the hood scoop to chrome. Afterthoughts doesn't sell them anymore. Anybody know where to get one?
Here is what Afterthoughts told me...
On the hood scoop piece, we have stopped doing the coating on the pieces, at least for now. GM just went up on the parts price by about 20% and we were receiving a few more blemished pieces than we would like from the coating process. We are looking into some other options and hope to have something similar in the future.

I think you should be creative... Sell me your SS hood, I'll give you my stock hood, and you can drive around Ricer style with a light Pewter Metallic flat hood :)
On a serious note, I remember reading in ls1tech that afterthoughts stopped carrying the chrome inserts because many people were unhappy with the quality. Since all they did was take a GM insert, and have it plated, it was a rough finish, not a smooth one.
The only thing I can suggest, if you really want one, is to buy another GM insert, sand out the texture to the point where you're sanding with like 2000 grit wet, and send it out to a place who plates plastic, such as ChromeTech USA - I know they deal with alot of hobby related things (I had them plate a set of 1:18 scale ZR1 wheels for me, and they look OK, not perfect). Since youre car doesn't see daily use (I don't think?) it might hold up OK. However, if you ever frequent carwahses (again, I don't know) I don't know how it would hold up with high pressure.

Search the net or ls1tech(can I say that) for vacuumize plating, Its not real chrome but the closest thing...
or you can break out 4.99 and get a can of chrome krylon and go to town ;)

hey andy
sorry to hear that afterthoughts stopped carrying the piece. I did not know that. I've had no problems with my insert as it looks as good as good when first ordered.
As for the those lurking in the darkness.....make them believe the alarm system is tied into a 12 guage and let the smith and wesson sheild (ditch the slomins) help you out.

Yeah Stuart. If I can't get one I'll probably get another one from Chevy and look into doing my own thing and no to both on the car wash and daily driver .
Seb, maybe I'll just steal yours.... J/K, I know better. :)

Stuart.. I found a SS hood ( 35th aniversary style, red with stripes ) for sale on Ebay..
The hood had some nasty damage though. Hinge area cracked badly.
I think it was 550 last I checked.. If you know of someone who could fix this.. then it might be a decent pick-up.
Anyways.. If my hood ever becomes missing.. YOUR CAR becomes missing. LOL J/K
Only reason i bought the SS.. for hood.. Loved the hood scoop. Oh yeah.. PLUS THE LS1
lol

Thanks for the lookout man.. I saw it on there... but my thoughts are unless it's perfect, I don't want it, because repairs like that aways surface down the road... I figure when the time is right, I'll find one... until then, I'll keep my stocker polished up nice :D
...and to dispell any myths, lol, I'd never take someone elses hood...

LOL Stuart.. Yeah that hood did look little smashed up. I was gonna get ( if found on ebay for a very good price ) another SS hood and then paint the Hood scoop Red. That way.. I dont damage the original hood and i still get the look I wanted.
Guess I may have to scrap that idea though. Looks like people know what they have.
