so i got done with my head swap a few days ago and i finally got a new coolant temp sensor since i broke mine on install.

when i start my engine and let it idle, the coolant temp rises to 210* pretty fast. after 210*, it still rises, but i shut down my car to prevent it from overheating. im trying to figure out why the temp is rising so fast. could it be a faulty thermostat? a bad water pump? air in the cooling system?

coolant is filled correct ? Also be sure to bleed out the air. Then go from there

The sender you bought is year specific are you sure it's for your model year?

sounds like ton's of air in the system... turn the heat on, full blast and leave the rad. cap open.. Let it run for quite a while.. but keep a eye on the temp's as well as the coolant flow through the radiator...

i got the 98 specific coolant temp switch. coolant was filled correctly and bled like illusionalta stated; radiator cap off, heat on full blast. i even tried jacking up the front p/s corner to make the radiator fill port the highest point on the vehicle in hopes air would escape easier. still got the same results.

im probably going to bring it to the mechanic on Friday to have the system pressure tested and what the diagonis is. maybe theres just a bunch of gasket material in the system from when i blew my head gasket and its clogging up somewhere? i dont know im all out of ideas on this one.

i want to have my car done by friday night! time to hit up bellmore.

Are you sure the motor is actaully running hot? Do youhave access to a laser digital temp gun to verify the dash reading is correct? You stated in another thread you had the motor running with a plug in the temp port. You never mentioned overheating issues then. Seems the temp guage is the sole factor your basing the overheating on or are there other symptoms like the rad puking into the overflow tank?

i suspected it ran hot when i had the sensor hole plugged up; the intake felt VERY hot to the touch after a few minutes. i didnt even run it for very long when i had it plugged because i feared it would overheat.

radiator overflow is not puking out. and no, i dont have access to a digital temp gun.

Is the radiator hot? The rad core should be real hot if not the stat may be bad.

Did you make sure the head gasket was facing the right way when you put the head back on. If the head gasket isn't installed correct you will block off the rear coolant passages and restrict the front ones.

btw, what is normal water temp at idle? at cruising speed?

head gaskets were installed the right way, im sure of that. i triple checked that before i put the heads on.

ill have to check the radiator. i bought a new thermostat so ill have to check that out.

If that engine is at 210 the rad core should be hot. I would highly suspect the stat did you already replace it already or have a new one on hand?

just bought the thermostat last night, but havnt gotten aroud to installing it yet. i had left the radiator cap open last night and the coolant went down a considerable amount so it bled some bubbles. i idled the car for 5 min while topping off the coolant. temp stayed pretty low. but then i took it for a quick drive it it shot up to a litte past 210 in a matter of 2 min. and that was with the heat on.

radiator is hot to the touch

but i think i might have found the problem. the line thats comes from the ac canister and goes to the firewall; its leaking cold air at where its bolted together to the other line right by the front p/s strut mount. it has a wierd odor to it too. not sure if this is relating to my cooling issues though

im kinda pissed. one reason why i brought it in to the shop was because i really wanted to go to bellmore tonight, fucking rain!
