Its been a long time coming but this weekend I started back working on my truck. Some of you may know that I started to do my t56 swap but I ran into a few problems that left me in a dilemma and I had to re-group.

Heres the thread I started back almost a year ago. http://performancetrucks.net/forums/showthread.php?t=435897&highlight=sbchvy

While putting in the t56 I had found out that the 99-00 with 4.8 5 speeds had the longer crank like the iron headed 6.0's. I either had to put in a 6.0 that I had(needed to be rebuilt and also had the longer crank as well) or swap cranks with the 4.8. I had changed my mind a bunch of times but I ended up picking up a 5.3 for $300 bucks to put in. Reason being its cheap, will work with the LS7 clutch I already had, and the power level will be ok for stock t56 and 10 bolt. If I did the foraged 6.0 I'd have to get the trans built, put together the 14 bolt I have and obviously the cost of the engine.

So this weekend I moved the truck from an old friends place, to SBChvy's work. They have a very nice shop and all the tools we'd need to make this job a breeze(hopefully):jest:

Heres the truck on the lift

We wanted to get the truck moved this weekend, and also get it ready to drop the motor in. While the motor was out, this would be the time to put in the new injector harness's for the new 60# injectors.

Heres the stock injector and clip, vs the new clip and injector...

While SBChvy worked on that, I wanted to get the trans cross member finished up so that would be ready to go. This is what we started with. I cut some steel to make a couple of gussets and then burned em in.

We finished up with the truck and went back to SBChvys house to work on the 5.3. I got it out of an 02 Avalanche and it had 77k on it.

Pulled the valve covers and was pretty surprised at how clean it was. The intake ports had a lot of carbon but other than that, so far it looks pretty good. The guy I bought it from said he ran Royal Purple from day one. I had bought a cam package for a friend but they had backed out so I had a 216/220 114lsa cam, LS6 springs and 7.4" hardened push rods so that what we put in the 5.3. Here's us swapping out the LS6 springs.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime114.jpg

Springs all installed and cleaned the motor a little.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime119.jpg

Decided to throw on the log and turbo to see what she'd look like and for a little motivation. Its a KBRacing turbo kit and I had purchased a used Garrett GT4202r 74mm compressor wheel 1.15 A/R exhaust housing from Thunder550. The exhaust housing is a little big for my application currently, but I bought it to be used on my 6.0 when its done. I wont be using these valve covers just yet.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/144.jpg

We also got the carrier bearing cross member welded in the truck as well and started on the fuel pump install. We have lots to do but hopefully next weekend we can get the motor and trans in the truck, and start to assembly the turbo kit.

Im really excited about working on the truck again and cant wait to get her done and take her for a ride! :) Ill keep everyone up to date as much as possible while working on the truck.

ya Imma be hustlin to get her done, hope to have it all wrapped up by April. I found that motor on craigslist. It was on there for like 2 months and I offered him 450 but then the intake mani was busted where the map sensor goes and the throttle body was junk so he knocked off the rest, and it came with that sweet little engine stand too! CL FTMFW!

Nice man! Im hoping to figure out what im going to do with my truck. Im up in the air of just getting rid of it or dumping a new engine/tranny into it. I was thinking D-Max Diesel but im broke right now. If you find another engine like that let me know, would be much appreciated.

Also, just to let you know, i cant see any of the pictures in that link you posted. Maybe you moved them in your photo bucket account?

Haha yea...Truck will be a track/drap setup if you will but I will be driving it on the street. I have my new truck for a daily driver so I dont mind having this being a little extreme. If I get sick of driving this, Ill just hop in the new truck :)

Well we had another decent weekend of workin on the truck this weekend. Our goal was do get the down pipe set up to work with the new turbo and maybe get the motor and trans sitting in the truck. Well we were able to get both done.

We got the motor all buttoned up and got the log wrapped up. Next we started to assemble the hot pipes to start to work on the down pipe.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime165.jpg

Heres the down pipe on hot pipes and you can see if needs to be moved over a little and moved back.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime172.jpg

We didnt get any pics yet of it done but we used a 4" to 3" reducer and it came out pretty nicely. I'll use this for now seeing I have no idea on where the tight spots are on the truck to build a new one so I'd be doing it blind.

Motor meet truck, truck meet motor  Hooked up a few plugs to let them get acquainted before we dropped the motor in there :)

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime178.jpg

Putting on the LS7 clutch. Used the old input shaft for the aliment tool, worked like a charm :)

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime185.jpg

As some of you may remember, I had troubles with the starter hitting the ring gear on my old 4.8, seein it had the longer crank. We put the starter on the just to double check. Its a MSD high torque starter from Summit. I got it because it doesnt have a cone so I can use it with my GTO M12 T56 bellhousing.

Trans slid right in...

Here she is, sitting in her new home.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/T56%20SWAP%202/Turbotime202.jpg

Really glad I got this far but there is soooo much more work to be done. Finish putting the harness on the engine, wire all my gauges, fix my floor boards, new carpet, finish the interior, install meth kit, two step, and the rest of the cold pipes and Im sure Im forgetting a bunch of stuff! :chug:

I did run into a problem that I hope can be an easy fix. My A/C compressor line sticks straight up and hit the log. I cannot even bolt it on the truck at all. Im going to try to bend in down and over a little bit to clear it. Heres a couple pics.

I have to ask you, where did you get those CHEVROLET valve covers? I have a 5.3L that I'm about to swap into my car. Those covers look sweet!

I bought em used from another member on a different forum...they do look sweet but I need to see if my coil re-location will work with the stock truck manifold 1st.

I'd spend the money on them, they look awesome! But instead of me screwing around with these first, I think it'd be best to get the motor actually in my car, running!

Got some more work done this weekend...FINALLY GOT HER TO RUN!!!!

Heres some pics of the radiator overflow mounted over on side. Stock location wouldn't have worked with this big ol charger. Haven't tried to put the inner fender well, the low coolant sensor may have to be unplugged.

The later truck have a different compressor and lines so I already had the compressor, I just need to get the different lines now and message them outta the way.

I forgot the camera on Sunday so I didnt get any pics of everything installed :bang:

I woulda drove it but she needs the new tune for the bigger injectors and I lost the o-ring for the clutch master cylinder. I ordered a few from McLeod along with some roll pins. Bled the clutch, flash the new tune and we can take her for a quick spin :mel:

Well its only run for about 20 seconds so I think I need so more coolant. I have always just left the cap off the overflow tank for a little while and it seems to help get a lot of air out.

got ya, common issue i ran into was no heat at idle. Thats how u know there is air in the system. It took a couple of starts run shut off fill release pressure on cap till i think i got the air out.

Well got the truck to move under its own power! I got a start up tune from Wheatley and she runs good. Got the clutch bled out but the pedal is all the way down to the floor so I think I need to bleed it out some more. Also got the bed back on it, tail lights, headlights, grille and other things. Finally looks like a truck again :) Dont mind the black parking light. Mine other ones are currently being "borrowed" and these are the only ones I had left. Still gotta cut the lower valance. Ill prolly just cut my stock one up for now, then later one get a Tahoe valence.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/012.jpg

We brought it in the shop and got a lot of little things accomplished. The cold pipe going into the throttle body was a little short seeing Im not using a MAF so we welded a little section of pipe on it.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/005.jpg

Went ahead and put the IAT sensor in an EGR block off plate and ran the wires from the MAF sensor to it. Also got the fuel pressure sending unit for my gauge installed and the wires run.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/008.jpg

Got that all done and realized that we forgot all about an air cleaner set up. I had the K&N filter from my old FIPK so I thought I'd use that. Well the inlet is 6" and the inlet of the turbo is 5" so we tried Home Depot, Napa and a few other places to make something work. I called a friend who has a bunch of old trucks and I was able to make something work. I got a few elbow and connectors off an old White 10 wheeler. Looks pretty cool if ya ask me :D Ill prolly sand it down and paint it and get new couplers. Im going to get a bunch of different hoses to clean up the engine bay but this way I can at least get the truck going and see what I need to buy.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/003.jpg

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/006.jpg

Heres all the gauges in. Got the Wideband on top, boost gauge, tach, fuel pressure is on the column and dual aeroforces and pyro in the center console cluster. Ran 2 fuse blocks and relays for all the gauges, one for power and one to turn on the lights. I gotta order some blue LEDs for the boost, fuel pressure and pyro.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/015.jpg

Got a pro 5.0 shifter for the trans. Still need to patch the holes in the floors and bend the new shifter handle to run with the full center console.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p240/GMCPete/016.jpg

Power steering pump is junk that I put on it so I gotta get a new one. Hope this weekend to change the pump and go down road with it.

Heres a quick video of me backing the truck outta the shop and parking it. You can really hear the power steering pump whine...:bang: Really surprised at how damn fast this thing is in 1st even with the 4.88s! Dont mind me taking a half hour trying the get it into reverse  I need to wire up the reverse lockout detent to my brake light or something like that.
