I have 1 3/4" ss Kooks long tubes going to a ss Kooks high flow cat y pipe & a ss Borla cat back adjustable exhaust(wide open, bypassing the muffler.) First the guts to my cats blew out & clogged the y-pipe. Fine, I don't need them anyway. That was months ago. I just split the stainless steel y-pipe tubing down the middle while racing someone the other day.I waxed an EVO with 375 rwhp, cool huh? Not even on a seam. Just blew apart the pipe. I have 545 hp to the wheels. Is it possible my single exhaust is creating too much backpressure? I also blew out all my exhaust valve seals & the car smokes a little. Do I need a freer flowing true dual exhaust to fix it? Has anyone ever fit one on a 96 Z28. It's tight down there, especially with my aluminum (wider) driveshaft. Are sidepipes an option? Maybe the car will make more power if the exhaust is better too. I don't know. I know you forced induction guys had to have run into some similar problems. I have a 383 LT4 w/ twin cooled Procharger. 13.5 psi @ 6300. Let me know any ideas. Thanks in advance ---Bob

Yeah, that's me. It's Mystic Teal Mettallic. Mostly green(Thats why I named it Snot Rocket) but looks purple or blue at night. Especially under gas station fluorescent lighting. Totally purple then. Later

I ran 614rwhp with 1 3/4 headers, a 2 1/2" y with gutted cats, and borla cat-back wide open. I don't know why the pipe would have blown apart on you besides maybe a backfire or previous speed bump scrape.
A better flowing exhaust will make more power. You will lose psi due to less backpressure. This will make everything more efficient though and you can pulley back up to the same psi and make more power .
Here's a few threads on what I did to make my combo more efficient and what I picked up for power.

Thanks, I missed a shift when I broke the exhaust & maybe that did it. The old 2nd to 1st shift at 6300 isnt the fastest way to drive a car. Maybe the engine jumped so hard that it just snapped the y pipe. I'll get a new ss (non-catted) Y from Kooks & try that first. Thanks

you might have a similar problem as me.. i have stock motor mounts and the torque of the motor when i hop on it creates exhaust issues with me all the time. do you have a solid exhaust mount somewhere in the rear where when the motor is torqueing its putting alot of stress on the piping there?

No, I put brand new poly motor mounts in when I did the 383. Everything else for exhaust is hanging with stock flexible style mounts. It's actually mounted better than ever. No more rattles, sqeaks, or any bumping at all. I think I just got a defective y pipe. Maybe I need a 4" system instead of duals. Seems like it would fit better & be cheaper. I've broken worse parts though. This, I can deal with.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Will it fit? Does anyone have a 96 Z w/ true duals? I'd like to see a pic. My car sounds mean as hell now, I can only imagine it with duals.I want stainless steel EVERYTHING ! I'm strapped for cash right now, but that never stopped me before. That's what credit cards are for, right.:D
